Alexandria was founded in 1749 by a Scottish merchant for the tobacco trade.

The old town is Alexandria’s downtown on the Potomac River waterfront. One of the streets in the old town, the King Street Mile, is voted the best place in Alexandria. You can enjoy the old town whether looking around the streets by strolling or taking a cruise and water taxi.
