WALKING WITH GOD—Like a Salt
Why did Jesus tell people that you are the salt of the earth? Interestingly, salt was a precious commodity as a necessity of life in ancient Roman times and was used in exchange.
2 Aspects to Consider the Meaning of Salt
Salt symbolizes purity which can help to preserve something from decaying, contamination, and harmful bacteria. Therefore, as an application, God regards His people as salt to protect and obey the value of God’s word, teaching and commands so that they become the heir who keeps and inherits God’s legacy.
Salt symbolizes friendship because people in ancient times ate salt to make friends with others. After all, eating salt meant being a lifelong friend. So, God and believers would be eternal friends by eating salt, which refers to the everlasting covenant between God and humans. Bible says, “If you abide in me, and my words abide in you, ask whatever you wish, and it will be done for you” (John 15:7).
“You are the salt of the earth. But what good is salt if it has lost its flavor? Can you make it salty again? It will be thrown out and trampled underfoot as worthless” (NLT, Mt. 5:13).
